What is Chai?

Chai is actually the Hindi word for “tea”. So when you say “chai tea” you’re actually saying “tea tea”. Chai tea is actually a blend of black tea along with spices.

In the west, chai tea has become synonymous with a spice blend known as masala chai.

Chai spices can vary in different recipes but this classic chai spice includes a mix of these spices:

  • Cinnamon
  • Ginger
  • Allspice
  • Cloves
  • Cardamom
  • Nutmeg

What’s great about mixing up a chai spice blend is you can tailor it to your tastes. Love ginger – you can add more. Want a bit more of a kick – add ground black pepper.

This recipe is as simple as rounding up the ingredients, mixing them well and putting them in a jar with a lid.

Chai Spice Blend Ingredients:

  • 4 Tbs Cinnamon
  • 1.5 Tbs Ground Ginger
  • 1 Tbs Allspice
  • 1 Tbs Cloves
  • 1.5 tsp Cardamom
  • 1.5 tsp Nutmeg

Chai Spice Blend Instructions:

Make sure to blend spices well as sometimes ground ginger can get clumpy. You can either whisk the ingredients in a bowl to remove lumps, or add the ingredients to a spice jar and shake well until blended.

Ingredients

  • 4 Tbs Cinnamon
  • 1.5 Tbs Ground Ginger
  • 1 Tbs Allspice
  • 1 Tbs Cloves
  • 1.5 tsp Cardamom
  • 1.5 tsp Nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Make sure to blend all spices well and break up any lumps using a whisk.
  2. Alternately, you can add all ingredients to a clean, empty jar and shake well to mix.
  3. Store in a jar with a tight fitting lid for up to one year.
