This drink is just as good hot: just warm your milk and start with hot coffee. Read on for all the details on how to make this popular Starbucks coffee drink DIY style at home.

What is the Starbucks Iced Caramel Macchiato?

According to the Starbucks website:

“We combine our rich, full-bodied espresso with vanilla-flavored syrup, milk and ice, then top it off with a caramel drizzle for an oh-so-sweet finish.”

Iced Caramel Macchiato Caffeine Content

Since this recipe contains espresso, it will have caffeine. The amount of caffeine depends on how much, and what kind of coffee you use. The original Starbucks version has 150 mg of caffeine in a standard 16-ounce Grande version.

If you’re cutting back on caffeine, you can make it with decaf coffee. You can also make it with regular brewed coffee or cold brew coffee instead of the espresso.

How to Make an Iced Caramel Macchiato

This easy DIY recipe uses only a handful of ingredients that you might already have on hand. I just had to purchase some caramel sauce to complete my ingredient list. You can make this hot or iced and even add extras like whipped cream, cinnamon or sprinkles if you’re feeling fancy.

Starbucks Iced Caramel Macchiato Ingredients

  • 4 ounces milk of your choice (dairy or plant based)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla syrup
  • Double shot of espresso (2 fl ounces) or brewed coffee, cooled
  • 1.5 tablespoons caramel sauce
  • Ice

One of my favorite things about this recipe is that you can change up the ingredients depending on our personal tastes. I usually make mine with cold brew because I normally have a pitcher in my fridge. You can also adjust the sweetness to your liking.

Step 1: Mix the milk with the vanilla syrup

Grab your favorite glass and mix together the milk and the vanilla syrup. Really, this recipe couldn’t be any easier.

My syrup looks dark because I was experimenting making my own vanilla syrup. I used brown sugar to make my simple syrup this time. If you buy vanilla syrup, it probably won’t be that dark, so don’t worry.

Step 2: Add plenty of ice

Add plenty of ice to your milk/vanilla syrup mixture. Make sure to leave a little room for the next step.

Add plenty of ice for that cool summer feel.

Step 3: Slowly pour in espresso

Without mixing, slowly pour your espresso over the milk mixture. Make sure your espresso has been chilled, or even better refrigerate before assembling his drink. You want to keep the separation between the layers easy to see.

Slowly add cold espresso. You want to see two distinct layers.

Step 4: Drizzle on the caramel sauce.

Here’s the fun part. Slowly drizzle on the caramel sauce. I like it to sort of drip down the sides of my glass so sometimes I add it just along the sides of the glass before I add the ice cubes. Either way, that caramel deliciousness is still tasty no matter how you add it.
